Four Things You Probably Didn’t Know About IITs

IITs are dream institutions for most students, premiere academics being the first reason, amongst others. Everybody knows that getting into one, after clearing JEE, is one hell of a job! You already know about the rather dull parts, like hard work and consistency and endless hours of study, but there are also some fun things you might not know nonetheless you will love ‘em!

No Dress code
No longer are you to adhere to the dress code, dress whatever you feel like. Unlike North Campus (DU), here, you won’t have to upgrade or replace your entire wardrobe to get through first year or the later ones for that matter. Most students look like they just jumped straight into the class from their beds. Bathing is optional! And yeah, don’t tell this one to an IITian, they will not like you very much after that!

The IIT Lingo
Yes, IITians have a language of their own, and it does sound alien in a twisted way. You will hear the words, understand their pronunciation but won’t get any meaning out of them. It’s like a secret code. Get this- ‘apping’ means applying to American universities in order to get admission, ‘enthu’ transcribes to enthusiasm. ‘V137’- is a classroom on the third floor of the academic block V. ‘puppiana’ refers to drooling over like a puppy over something.

Cults and Societies
If you were the nerd, or the bully or any other regular student in your class; you don’t have to worry at all. IITs are amongst the best places to find people like you, people who you can relate to you. You will never feel ‘out of place’ in here, ever ‘cause there are just so many cults and societies around, often run by students themselves. These societies will become a second home and the friends you get here will become your friends for life. Societies cover almost all things, from photography, music, dance, movies, comedy, debate to every other thing that you can.

Academics

IITs are hailed as one of the finest institutions across Asia, and there is a reason behind that. A lot of students simply assume that all they have to do is clear JEE and their pains will go away but that’s just so far away from the truth. You have to actually bust your but, it’s tough out there and tough in there, so tighten up your belts cause you have got some work to do, actually lots of it.
