How to Deal with Exam Time Stress

Exam times are loved, though mostly dreaded throughout the world, primary reason being the stress that comes with them.

Are you too preparing for competitive exams like IIT JEE, AIPMT, CA CPT or NDA and dealing with a lot of stress because of it? Do you get cold feet before entering the examination hall? If yes, then we have outlined some tips for you that will help you calm and focus better to score more in your exams.

Be Prepared

‘Prevention is better than cure’, the saying goes perfectly with the situation in hand. Most often, the major reason of stress and anxiety is the lack of proper preparation before exams. A lot of students fail to manage their time properly prior to exams, resulting in a subpar preparation and this, coupled with the general stress and excitement before the exam turns into a cocktail of mind numbing anxiety, which is very bad! It’s better to be thorough in your preparation to avoid such a situation.

Take enough breaks

Yes, ‘There are miles to go before you sleep’ but you are running a marathon, not a sprint!

According to studies it is observed that our brains can only focus optimally for 45 minutes at a go, beyond that if we push it, our effectiveness suffers. So, it is better to study or revise in shorter time segments than a larger one. Take breaks, refresh yourself. And while you are at it, do something completely different from studying.

Exercise more

Exercise is probably the best means of keeping stress at bay, and it doesn’t even cost a dime. Studies have shown that regular exercise keeps optimum levels of dopamine (the feel good hormone) in blood. Take brisk walks while you are at a break or a do a set of push-ups. Morning walks are the key to a healthy body.

Have a proper diet

‘We are what we eat’. Having a proper diet is the key to a healthy body and a healthy mind. Keep the levels of your blood sugar steady so that you don’t face energy dips during the day. Avoid processed sugar and processed foods, drink lots of water. Lean protein is very good for keeping steady flow of energy as it burns slowly. Its sources are chicken, salmon or eggs.
Don’t go to your examination hall with an empty stomach.

Avoid caffeine and nicotine

Don’t resort to caffeine or nicotine while dealing with exam stress, this will only make you crave them more and make the situation worse.

Take proper sleep

Sleep properly on the night before your exam; you don’t want to be jumpy due to the lack of it. It is when you sleep, whatever that you have learnt goes into the more permanent parts of your memory. Never cut back on sleep, it’s of utmost importance for a sharp mind and a better memory. Last but not the least- follow these tips.
